The Age of Humanoid Robots: NVIDIA's Path-Breaking AI Announcements at GTC 2025

It is now the present era when humanoid robots cease being the stuff of distant dreams. Announcing the latest technologies at the 2025 GTC has laid the groundwork for a radical transition in robotics. With the advent of such innovations as Groot N1 AI model and the Newton physics engine, humanoid robots are now being made smarter and more capable than ever before in their integration into everyday life.

Introducing Groot N1: Redefining the New Standard in Generalist Robotics

One of the most sweeping highlights of GTC 2025 was NVIDIA's Isaac Groot N1 model. Touted as world’s first open, fully customizable foundation model for generalized humanoid reasoning and skills, Groot N1 promises to imbue robots with human-like cognitive abilities.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang declared that the era of generalist robotics is officially upon us. In his keynote address, Huang showed a humanoid robot from One X performing everyday domestic activities. The robot efficiently tidied up, demonstrating Groot N1 in real-world conditions. Even more astonishingly, the robot reciprocated with highly coordinated movements with the assistance of a post-trained policy based on Groot N1.

How Groot N1 Functions: A Dual-System Design

The Groot N1 system uses a dual-system design inspired by human cognition. The two components are:

System 2: Handles deliberate, slow thinking for complex planning and decision-making.

System 1: Executes these plans through rapid, reflex-like movements, ensuring fluid and precise actions.

NVIDIA trained Groot N1 with large datasets of real human demonstrations and synthetic motion trajectories created with NVIDIA Omniverse. This training mixture allowed the model to learn about object manipulation and multi-step problem-solving tasks without being forced into retraining all the time.

Newton: A Truly Groundbreaking Physics Engine

NVIDIA has also unveiled Newton, a mighty open-source physics engine built on the NVIDIA Warp framework, in collaboration with Google DeepMind and Disney Research. With an emphasis on accurate simulation of real-world physics, Newton enhances the ability of robots to learn and interact within a digital space before stepping into the real world.

Disney Research is already applying Newton to achieve its own robotics goals. At GTC, Disney presented the BDX droids, inspired by Star Wars, developed using this state-of-the-art technology. Kyle Laughlin, Senior VP at Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development, discussed how Disney plans to use this technology to create more lifelike robotic characters that will ease into immersive experiences in their theme parks.

Enhancing Robotic Training with Synthetic Data

Blue print Groot, by NVIDIA, is yet another revolution. This method of synthetic data generation enables training of robots but within months. For example, Huang said during the event that NVIDIA had generated 780,000 synthetic trajectories in just 11 hours which was comparable to 6,500 hours of human labor.

In conjunction with real examples, synthetic data increases Groot N1's performance by 40%. Therefore, this hybrid technology reduces the time and cost required in the training of robots, thereby pushing the performance limits.

Emergence of Global Humanoid Robotics

With emerging technologies from NVIDIA, a number of companies have entered the market with humanoid robots endowed with unique capabilities. Some of these brilliant robots include:

Dobot Humanoid: In China, this 28 degree-of-freedom robot is known for its dexterous manipulation, handling delicate objects such as cherries, and saving 42% energy consumption based on the straight-knee design.

Noetix N2: 40 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) of AI computing power, 15 w power consumption, and, of course, an NVIDIA Jetson module are its key features: the robot has 18 degrees of freedom and can achieve velocities of 3.2 meters per second. Reinforcement learning is used to clear complex environments.

Kepler K2: The K2 is also quite giant, spanning 178 cm (70 inches) and rooting out a weight of approximately 85 kg (187 lbs). It has 52 degrees of freedom. Its Nebula system guides vision, mapping, and multi-modal interaction, so it can handle heavy objects as well as travel across rocky terrain.

Engine. ai PM01: It has fluid, almost dance-like movements, has 23 degrees of freedom, and arms powered by an Intel N97 and NVIDIA Jetson Orin. Since the joint is twisted at the waist and can develop torque up to 330 Nm (243 ft-lbs), the actuator can make graceful, falling-free motions.
